Introduction to the Wrist and Hand
The wrist and hand pose a challenge for many therapists in musculoskeletal practice. They are complex anatomically and functionally, and unless you are treating them regularly it is difficult to feel confident with clinical examination, diagnosis, radiology interpretation and management. This is an intensive 1-day course to build your expertise and confidence when dealing with a wide range of wrist and hand injuries and pain problems. It is very hands-on, including practical skills for clinical examination, and some basic splinting techniques. Your presenter, Ian Dowley, has worked exclusively with the wrist and hand for over 20 years in both public and private practice.
Learning outcomes
- At the completion of the course, participants should be able to examine the wrist and hand with confidence, and should have a framework for differential diagnosis of many common wrist and hand conditions
- Participants will be expected to demonstrate competency in clinical examination and testing of the wrist and hand
- At the completion of the course, participants should have an enhanced understanding of radiographic findings relevant to diagnosis of wrist and hand conditions
- At the completion of the course, participants will have an enhanced understanding of clinical reasoning in managing wrist and hand conditions
- At the completion of the course, participants should have the diagnostic and management skills to make appropriate clinical decisions when faced with an acute finger, thumb, or hand injury in a sporting context
- At the completion of the course, participants should have an enhanced understanding of immediate on-field examination and diagnosis of common traumatic/sporting hand injuries
- At the completion of the course, participants should have a framework for deciding when to refer sporting hand injuries for radiological examination
- At the completion of the course, participants should have an understanding of common pitfalls and errors made in the management of acute sports related hand injuries
- During the course, participants will be expected to demonstrate competency in applying basic protective splinting and taping to assist in a safe return to sporting activity after hand injury

- This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Jay is an APA Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who has worked at Flex Physiotherapy for over a decade, providing second opinion management for people who have complex and persistent musculoskeletal pain conditions. He is an expert clinical mentor and educator with Global Specialist Physiotherapy. In 2022, Jay completed his PhD in knee osteoarthritis and he continues to work with his PhD team through a social enterprise - Evoolve Pain Care Academy, which aims to train clinicians across the world in Cognitive Functional Therapy.
